Marie curie

Marie Curie
Radium is a radium material. Marie Curie made Radium and she discovered radium and Polonium. She discovered lots of things in her life even nuclear medicine.

Marie Curie was born in November 7th 1867 in Warsaw, Poland. Pierre Curie was her husband but he died on the street by accident because a horse and a wagon ran over him because the man couldn’t control the horse. Marie Curie discovered Radium which is a radioactive material. She had two children, Irene and Eve. Marie won two nobel prizes, who she was the only person honoured as such in two science categories. She was also a professor at the university of France. Marie Curie was a scientist who discovered Radium and Polonium. Marie Curie is famous for discovering the element of Radium. She used acid 6 times, 60 tons of water and a long metal spoon to make Radium. The Radium was stronger than uranium 100 times stronger. Its strong enough to go through metal and you can’t see through it and its unbreakable. She died in July 4th 1934 by radioactive sickness in France.

The way that Marie Curie made the Radium and discovered it was smart and creative.

Wind power

A wind power is like a windmill but using the wind to make electricity. It spins a wind turbine and the bigger the size, the better the wind produces more electricity.

Some wind powers are also in some other countries. Here are the names of the farms of windmills around the world:

Gansu Wind Farm - China
Alta (Oak Creek - Mojave) - USA
Jaisalmer Wind Farm - India
Sheperds Flat Wind Farm - USA
Roscoe Wind Farm - USA
Horse Hollow Wind Energy Centre - USA
Capricorn Ridge Wind Farm - USA
Fowler Ridge Wind Farm - USA
Whitelee Wind Farm - UK
Fantanele Cogealac Wind Farm - Romania

Wind turbines work the opposite way of a fan. Instead of making wind by electricity, wind turbines use wind to make electricity. The wind turns the blades which spins the shaft and makes electricity. The electricity is sent through transmission and distribution lines to a substation, then on to homes, businesses and schools.

Wind power is good for our environment because its 100% clean and it doesn’t pollute the air and water. It helps to conserve other fuels which may be in short supply, and it doesn’t produce chemical pollution. Wind turbines use the wind to rotate blades that turns a rotor - which creates electricity. They range from very small turbines supplying energy for battery charging system.

Wind power is important because it helps stop Global warming. Wind power has good potential to lessen our dependence on traditional Materials like gas, oil even coal. Wind power does not make a mistake to our planet. Wind power is sustainable energy. turbines can make electricity by using kinetic energy.

Wind turbines harness the power of the wind and use it to generate electricity.

Spider that weighs as much as a new born puppy

World's Biggest Spider Weighs As Much As A Newborn Puppy
Near northern Brazil and southern Venezuela there is one of the biggest spiders that weighs as much as a newborn puppy. The giant terrestrial creatures that belong to the tarantula family live inside deep burrows in marshy or swampy areas, Mates dies soon after  but females can live up to 25 years. His eyesight is poor but his hearing is great. His fangs are almost 1 inch long. The spider has a leg span of up to 12 inches (30 centimeters). The Goliath has sensitive hair that tells him if there is danger. Its biggest dangers are big cats especially the jaguar and koati. If it’s in danger he scratches his hair and uses it like missiles on his enemies. When he does it, animals leave and lose their appetite and then the Goliath runs away.

Blue Whale

WALT: proofread and edit
The blue whale
The largest animals ever to have been on the earth are still living today. The blue whale is much bigger than the largest dinosaur one.

Blue whale measured nearly 34 metres and weighed more than 220 tonnes! Everything about the blue whale is big even its tongue may weigh up to four tonnes. They also call to each other in big voices which can be heard over 800 kilometres. They are easily the loudest living creatures.

Because they are mammals, blue whale breathe air, this means they must come to the surface of the ocean to breathe. The “waterspout” a whale blows out is not really water at all - it is hot breath and water vapour.

Mothers feed their young on milk by the time they are a year old, the young calf may weigh more than 20 tonnes. They can live for up to 45 years.

Tiger son

Tiger son
What happened in the story?
In the story of Tiger Son an old widow named Chen Ma lived with her only son in their house in the forest of Shanxi Province. Her son was one of the tiger hunters said by the local magistrate.
Her son died by getting eaten by a tiger and the rest of the hunters went to kill it and told Chen Ma. She did not get the profits but they got her the baby cub from the tiger that ate her son, he was tied up by the neck and it was choking him and he had cold wobbly legs and toothless gums. The tiger grew bigger and bigger until it grew to its maximum size. The tiger built his own house near his mum and because Chen Ma adopted him, he always came with gifts for Chen Ma. After Chen Ma died her tomb was guarded by the tiger that she adopted and after the tiger died his tomb was written where Chen Ma’s tomb was and the story of the tiger was written on it and it became a legend.

Problem?
The problem in the story was that Chen Ma was a lady and the baby tiger’s skin were good for boots for her feet and she could make Tiger bone wine to ease the pain in her joints. But she didn’t want to kill the young baby tiger so she fed the tiger some of the food in the shed. Tiger hunters were going to kill the tiger because it was to its maximum size and it could go and kill the villagers that go to Chen Ma’s house for sewing. Chen Ma went to the local magistrate to tell him that she wanted it to adopt it.

Resolve
The magistrate told Chen Ma that one day the tiger will lose his behavior and kill her. She said that she was too old now anyways and that the tiger was her only companion left, she said she lost her husband and lost her son and all she has left was the tiger so the magistrate let her adopt it.

Trip to Mary Mackilliop centre

Trip to Mary Mackillop Centre

It was our 60th Diamond Jubilee and we went to the Mary Mackillop centre in Mission Bay where the Josephite sisters live. We went there because they were the ones who founded our school in 1954.  We went inside the chapel and we celebrated the Eucharist, Fr. Peter officiated the mass.

Before we started Sr. Colleen was welcoming us to the Mary Mackillop centre and she introduced us to Sr. Elizabeth, one of the first sister who taught in our school and she was the principal in 1954. The church had a dome shaped roof and there was a big circle window saying  “ Go out, You may not rest secure for need calls loudly, You must seek God there, Loving shall be your flame. “.  There were lots of seats and the seats at the back were for the Sisters. I am thankful for the sisters because they found our school and they kept it going.

We started with our opening hymn, Mother Mary of the cross.  After the song Father Peter started the mass. During the mass  you could hear people singing and whispering to each other. The chapel looked like our church the dome roof and the shape look similar. We had the gospel then prayers for the faithful. Next we greeted each other by shaking hands and saying “ peace be with you.” . The mass was going to end in a short time but before that we had the bread and then prayed. Short time later the mass finished and did our final song which was with give me a J.  Sr. Colleen told what we were going to do so then we went with our groups and explored the  place.

Peace Poem

Peace Poem
From: Patrick
Peace is quite feeling from within.
Peace is as white as a dove.
Peace looks like people working together as a team in harmony and co-operating with each other.
Peace sounds quite, calm with no violence.
Peace feels like happiness and joy everywhere.

Computers

WALT: write an explanation

Computers
By: Patrick
What are computers? A computer is a mechanic technology where you can do lots of things with it and you can use it as a useful tool.

For the use of computers you need internet so you can go on websites. You can play games on it and that makes you think of  strategies to win the game. The computer is useful for facts because if you need to find facts for school work or for a project you can research on different websites and get different information and facts you may need.  It exercises your fingers  in surfing for information. It  saves paper and pencil for you because your work is saved in the cloud.  Moreso, you don’t need to buy books and stationery to do your inquiry.

More positive things about about computer is that you can shop online instead of going outside in the real world and huggling with people in the shops. You can communicate with other people through email, twitter, social media and facebook. It can increase your reading and writing skills because you can read facts and information on websites and type on microsoft, presentation and google docs. You can research places like Auckland and there are categories like maps or GPS and then you know where you are going. It’s mobile  and use worldwide so you know what’s going on in the other side of the world.

Some negative facts are that you can go on bad sites you’re not allowed on without a parent watching you. You need to know cybersafety rules to protect you. You can not copy facts on websites and the common copywrite company will be looking on your work to see if your facts are copied .  You need to write your facts in your own words.  Sometimes  it can freeze a lot and crash and lose memory on what you are doing.  If you go on the computer for too long you might get addicted with it and you will never get off. You need to pay a lot  of electricity if you use it too much.  It makes you eyes hurt if you  work and look at it for too long and do things on it. Sometimes other people can go on your own computers and go on things you're not allowed  on and your parents might think you went on it.

The Computer is great tool and it has many good uses and also bad uses.  I think it is still a good tool and a better technology  to use by all in the future.

Book Reveiw

Book Review- Spirit Animals
Spirit Animals was about four people who had animals that look like spirits and go through lots of adventures to destroy evil. Some trouble came to them when some old allies working with their enemies and the group tried to go and get their old allies back. Their success will have to come later in the future but they will get there.

My favourite part of the story is when they defeated the evil at the end and got more spirit animals and they got better and better, Until……

This is a book that you should read. I recommend that this should be given 4-10 stars. The animals are spirits and they are like superheroes.

New Dinosaur Found
In Argentina, new fossils have been found that made one of the biggest dinosaurs ever been discovered.
Scientists have 70% of the bones needed to complete the massive, long-necked, plant-eating Dreadnoughtus schrani , dinosaur which is one of the biggest animals to have ever lived on earth.
They thought that this dinosaur measured to 26 metres and weighed almost 60 tonnes. Its tail alone measured 9m long. That’s long enough like the length of a bus.
The  skeleton revealed that the dinosaur was still growing at the time of its death.  Nobody knew how big it would become.
Based on the location of the rocks where the fossils were found it was believed that the young dinosaur was killed by a massive flood that occurred that time.  Scientists thought Dreadnoughtus was a huge animal and would have had no predators. All other creatures would have been terrified of its size.

Te Tahawai marae

Te Tahawai Marae
On Monday the year 5, 6, 7 and 8 went to Te Tahawai Marae in Pakuranga . We went on a double decker bus and the boys were at the bottom and the girls were at the top. When we got there it was silent, the boys had to be at the back of the line and the girls at the front.

We were outside the waharoa as the manuhiri and the tangata whenua and Rose, Azaria and Caroline did the Karanga as we walked in to the marae. Before we got into the Marae, we had to take our shoes off because they don’t want to have their marae dirty. The boys sat at the front and the girls at the back. The hosts did prayers and sang and Bronson did a speech but he messed it up but he did it right the second time and he put the koha down. After that we did the singing. The tangata whenua apoligised because there was no men watching. After that we did the hongi and we washed our hands because it was a tradition and protocol they do.

In the Wharekai, we ate one cookie and a glass of water. After we finished eating,  the tangata whenua put us into groups, the year 5 girls were in one group and the boys and year 8 were in another group. The year 5 girls were writing patterns on ancestors in the wharenui and the boys and room 4 drew an eternal line with korus to show our family in the wharekai.

After we finished the first lesson the year 5 were still doing the patterns on the ancestors and we got two poi’s and we danced with them to a song shaking our pois in and out, up and down. We had to spread out because the pois were hard and it would hit other people’s faces. Later after both groups finished, we swapped places and the boys and room 4 did the patterns on the ancestors. The year 5 girls were doing the eternal line and poi dance.

Twenty minutes after the lessons, we all gathered at the wharenui and the tangata whenua told us they liked our visit and they hope if we come again there will be men or boys.  Mrs Driver gave a final speech for the tangata whenua. We went outside we put our shoes outside, we went to the bus. We went back to school before lunch and ate before lunchtime.

Tungkung Langit and Alunsina
by: Patrick

In the beginning of time there was nothing, and there was everything. The world was made out of mists and shapeless things that were formless, and there was beauty from everywhere. There were two Gods, Tungkung Langit and Alunsina. The two gods married each other and lived in the highest Kingdom of the place. Tungkung Langit took their chance of writing everything in the world. His job was to restore order from war and confusion around him so everyday he left to do his job and leave Alunsina at home.

While Tungkung Langit was responsible,  Alunsina stayed at home and she was lazy, jealous and selfish at Tungkung Langit’s work. She liked to daydream and comb her hair all day long. She always sent the breeze to hide and spy on Tungkung Langit. When Tungkung Langit found out what Alunsina was doing, he was not pleased. Tungkung Langit told her it was ungodly of her to be jealous. Alunsina resented and Tungkung Langit lose her temper. He took the power from his wife and sent her away, no one knew where she went, and she just dissapeared.

Several days after Tungkung Langit became very lonely, he didn’t where to find her or where to look. He missed Alunsina especially when he came home after his work and found the house empty. One day he thought of an idea, he made the world beautiful so that Alunsina would  see that he was coming home, but she didn’t. So he took Alunsina’s jewelries and put them in the sky so she could find her way home, but still Alunsina didn’t responded. By this time, Tungkung Langit lived alone in his palace in the sky. When it rained, it said to be Tungkung Langit’s tears, still longing for the return of his beloved Alunsina.

writing sample 6

Our family are at the beach and we are going to make a sandcastle with our blue shovel and yellow bucket. We are going to start making our  sandcastle.

It is sunny like we are in Hawaii and the tides are low so people can swim. I can hear sand swishing through the ground like a sandstorm. The water and waves are smelling salty. We are putting sand in our bucket and we made lots of sandcastles and it looks like a castle for kings and queens. We are making a wall around it and we are putting one more sandcastle in the middle so it looks like a house surrounded by towers and a wall.

Part of the sky became cloudy and our parents came back from their walk and we showed them our sandcastle and our parents took a picture of us, and I put my shovel behind my head and my friend is holding his bucket with sand in it. We now are packing up and going back home.

earth facts

Earth Facts

  • Earth is a planet in our solar system.
  • Earth orbits around the sun.
  • Earth’s land areas are visible from space.
  • Planet Number: Earth is the third planet from the sun.
  • Distance from the sun: 93 million miles (150 million km)
  • Size: The distance around Earth’s middle is about 24,900 miles. That is about as long as 365,000 football fields put together.
  • The word Earth is another name for ground. When the planet was named, people did not fly in planes or travel to space. The ground was their home. So it made sense to name the planet after it.
  • Soil and dirt are also called earth.
  • Earths orbit around the sun takes about 365 days. That is one full year.
  • Earths axis is not straight up and down. It is tilted at about 23 degrees. This tilt gives Earth its seasons.

I am getting home from school and I’m in the lounge doing my homework. I need help so I ask my Dad to help me. Dad takes the paper and tells me, “What is the homework about.”, Dad says to me. “Its about cryptid animals.”, I replied.

“What are cryptid animals.” says Dad. I tell him that cryptid animals are animals that are strange and not in any species. “See you already know about cryptid animals.”, Dad tells me. “But I have to name all the species and how they are cryptid.”, I replied. As dad tells me about cryptid animals I try to focus really hard because the homework is due tomorrow and I am worried if I don’t finish it. My Dad now tells me that cryptid animals are all over the world and lots have been photoed or found on footage, lots of people have been putting them on newspaper but some say that they’re not real until some people have seen cryptid animals themselves. “So tell me all the things you know about cryptid animals.”, Says Dad. “Cryptid animals are creatures that are not in any species, and that lots of people seen those animals and that they put on footage, lots of people say that they don’t exist but lots of people actually seen them themselves and we can see them now if they are still alive.” I replied. Dad tells me to put it in my bag so I can be ready for school.

Science Showcase

What happened yesterday?

Yesterday was a science showcase where every class have to go to each class and see what they have been learning in science. Our class learned about heat, solar power and solar oven, Wind power, batteries and static electricity. Room 4 was the best class for science because they got lots of interesting experiments.

I didn’t like the science showcase that much because I had to explain four experiments myself all at the same time and they were: Wind Power, Solar power and Solar oven and batteries. I also didn’t go to other classes until the end but it was cool.

I found experiments that were interesting because they were actually real science. The Solar Oven because when you put food in it and you put the oven outside in the sun for a while the sun cooks the food that is inside. The lava lamp was also interesting too because they put a pill in the lava lamp so the fizz can go up.

I learned about the solar oven because the sun went through the foil to cook the food in it. I also learned about static electricity because the plastic got magnetism when you rub it on your hair and when you let go your hair will go up and if you put it on paper it will stick on the plastic.

I will like to have another science showcase so I can learn more about science and teach people about science.
